SAN DIEGO - Sara Hannemans late goal broke a 4-4 deadlock and propelled the San Diego State womens water polo team to a 6-4 victory over San Jose State. Hannemans tally came with just 2:54 left in the game, and teammate Whitney Winlow added a log-distance lob shot goal with 1:18 left to secure the win for SDSU.
The Aztecs, ranked sixth in the country, improved their season record to 16-10 overall and 3-4 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The 10th-ranked Spartans fell to 10-14 (1-6 MPSF).
San Diego State led 3-1 at the half and enjoyed a 4-2 lead after three quarters. But goals by San Jose States Dottie West and Suzanne Hughes knotted the score before Hannemans late strike.
Winlow, a freshman from Las Vegas, led the Aztecs with two goals while Hanneman, Larisa Baltgalvis, Allison Gregory and Megan Dunbar tallied once apiece. Aztec goalkeeper Curran Teigen recorded 11 saves while Spartan netminder Elizabeth Holtz had eight.
Up next for the Aztecs are a pair of MPSF matches at UCLA (April 2) and UC Santa Barbara (April 3) to conclude their conference schedule before competing in the MPSF championship tournament April 9-11 at a site to be determined.
