SAN DIEGO - Hawaii defeated San Diego State, 9-7, on Sunday in the fifth-place game at the 1999 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Water Polo Tournament.
The Aztecs trailed throughout, despite getting four goals from Sara Hanneman and one each from Larisa Baltgalvis, Megan Dunbar and Wendy Jensen. Goalie Curran Teigen made nine saves on the day.
The Aztecs, who were seeded seventh in the tournament, finished third in Bracket B play with a 2-2 record while the Rainbows had an identical mark in Bracket A. In pool play, SDSU had defeated Pacific (5-0) and UC Santa Barbara (9-5), but lost to eventual tourney California (9-8 in overtime) and Stanford (8-4).
Junior Larisa Baltgalvis, who scored 13 goals in the Aztecs five games, was named to the MPSF All-Tournament team.
The loss to Hawaii makes SDSUs season record 18-15. The Aztecs will play at UC San Diego on Wednesday (April 14) before competing atthe National Qualification Tournament (also at UCSD) April 23-25.
