SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State womens water polo team bounced back from an 9-8 double overtime loss to number-three ranked California to defeat UC Santa Barbara, 9-5, in day one of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship Tournament. San Diego States record now stands at 17-13.
Against the Golden bears, the eighth-ranked Aztecs, led by Larisa Baltgalvis four goals along with three by teammate Sara Hanneman, finished regulation tied at 7-7. Each team score once in the first extra period before Cals Beth Irwin notched the game winner in the second overtime stanza.
In SDSUs second match of the day, Baltgalvis and Hanneman scored three goals apiece to lead the Aztecs. The teams were tied 3-3 at the break, but San Diego State held the Gauchos scoreless in the third period and outscored UCSB 6-2 in the second half.
Aztec goalkeeper Curran Teigen had a busy day, making 15 saves against Cal and 11 more against UC Santa Barbara.
SDSU continues pool play on Saturday (April 10) with games against Pacific (at 8:35 a.m.) and Stanford (12:55 p.m.). On Sunday, pool standings will determine the matchups for the title game as well as contests for third, fifth, seventh and ninth place.
