SAN DIEGO - The sixth-ranked Aztec womens water polo team finished its 1999 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation season with a pair of road losses over the weekend. SDSU lost 8-2 at UCLA on Friday (April 2) and 6-5 at UC Santa Barbara on Saturday (April 3). The defeated drooped the Aztecs season record to 16-12, and they finish tied for sixth place (with USCB and Long beach State) in the MPSF at 3-6.
Sara Hanneman and Shannon Halpin scored for SDSU against the Bruins on Saturday as UCLA jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one period. Curran Teigen made six saves in goal for San Diego State.
At Santa Barbara, Hanneman scored a pair of early goals as the Aztecs jumped out to a 3-0 lead. However, after trailing 4-1 at the half, the Gauchos answered back with five straight goals to win the match. In addition to Hanneman, Wendy Jensen, Whitney Winlow and Megan Dunbar scored for SDSU. Aztec goalie Curran Teigen made 10 saves.
Next up for the Aztecs is the 1999 MPSF Tournament at UCLA beginning Friday, April 9. The Aztecs have received the number-seven seed for the tourney, and will open pool play against the number-three seed California Friday at 10:45 a.m.
SDSUs remaining games will be against #6 Santa Barbara (5:15 p.m., April 9), #10 Pacific (8:35 a.m. April 10) and #2 Stanford (12:55 p.m., April 12). Pool play standings will determine the matchups for Sundays contests.
