SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State womens water polo team opened play at the Collegiate National Tournament on Friday (May 7) with a win over Long Beach State, then fell to California in the quarterfinals later that afternoon. With the loss, SDSUs goal now becomes a fifth-place finish at the tourney being hosted by UC Davis.
The 6th-ranked Aztecs began the day with a match against league rival (11th-ranked) Long Beach State, and came away with a 13-9 victory. Senior Sara Hanneman tallied seven goals for SDSU, one short of the school single-game record. Larisa Baltgalvis and Wendy Jensen added two apiece while the Aztecs got single goals from Shannon Halpin and Whitney Winlow. Goalkeeper Curran Teigen was called upon to make eight saves.
In the final game of the day, the Aztecs were matched against number-three ranked Cal, and the Golden Bears proved too strong, coming away with an 8-2 victory. Megan Dunbar and Halpin tallied once apiece for SDSU and Teigen again had eight saves.
The Aztecs season record now stands at 21-19 as they prepare to meet the host school, UC Davis, at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday (May 8). UC Davis, ranked seventh in the nation, fell to number-two seed Stanford 6-1 on Friday.
Should SDSU defeat UC Davis, it would advance to the fifth-place contest at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday (May 9). A loss to Davis would put the Aztecs in the seventh-place game at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday.
