BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The San Diego State women's water polo team lost to Massachusetts, 4-3, in the fifth-place game today at the Collegiate National Championships in Bloomington, Ind.
Casey Finnegan and Whitney Winlow helped the Aztecs jump out to a 2-0 lead early in the contest, but SDSU could not overcome a strong defensive effort by the Minutewomen. The three-goal effort was the third lowest output all season for the Aztecs.
The loss marks the career finale for two San Diego natives. Co-captain and goalkeeper Curran Teigen (Lakeside, Calif./El Capitan HS) snagged 12 saves in the game and leaves SDSU as the school's all-time leader in saves. Fellow co-captain and senior Larisa Baltgalvis (La Mesa, Calif./Helix HS) scored once in the contest, bringing her career total to 235 - another school record.
UCLA won the national championship with a 11-4 victory over USC.
SDSU finishes the year with a 18-16 record.
