San Diego - Holly Hartzell's goal with two seconds left in the game gave San Diego State a 7-6 victory over Hartwick in the season opener for both squads Friday afternoon at Bud Kearns Pool.
Hartzell, a second team All-American as a freshman last season, fought off her defender with her back to goal and fired a no-look shot into the upper right corner past Hartwick goalie Sara Daseler. It was the Aztec sophomore's fourth goal of the game as she led all scorers.
The game was closely contested throughout with neither team managing to take a lead of greater than one goal after the first quarter. The teams traded goals and the lead through the first three periods.
The Aztecs got on the board first with goals by Hartzell and junior utility player Casey Finnegan. Hartwick cut the lead in half on a goal by Sheri Johnson as the first quarter ended with SDSU holding a 2-1 lead.
In the second period, the Hawks went ahead 3-2 on two strikes by Colleen Santos, but a goal from SDSU's Donna Stivers knot the score at 3-3 at the half.
Two Hartzell goals and another by Finnegan helped the Aztecs to a 6-5 advantage after three quarters, but Hartwick's Megan Thomson scored with 4:20 left, and it appeared the contest was headed to overtime before Hartzell's last-second heroics.
Both Daseler and Aztec goalkeeper Heather Stiles were credited with 12 saves apiece, including a couple spectacular stops and saves in breakaway situations.
San Diego State will play its second game of the new season Friday evening when it hosts Indiana at Bud Kearns Pool at 6:00 p.m.
