SAN DIEGO -- A UC Santa Barbara penalty goal late in the second overtime nullified a three-goal effort by San Diego State's Holly Hartzell and lifted the seventh-ranked Gauchos to a 7-6 win over the Aztecs Saturday morning at Bud Kearns pool in Balboa Park.
The Aztecs never led in the contest, but drew even late in regulation with Hartzell's third goal of the game. However, San Diego native Kelley Tiffany provided the margin of difference on the penalty shot.
The Gauchos struck early with three first-quarter goals and UCSB held a 4-3 advantage at intermission in the first conference (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) game of the season for both teams.
Heidi Matsumoto, Dominique Delgado and Amber Prestegard all had one goal each for the Aztecs.
Both the Aztecs and UCSB will participate in the Gaucho Invitational next weekend in Santa Barbara.
The loss was just the eighth for SDSU against Santa Barbara in 29 all-time meetings. The Gauchos improve to 9-4 for the season while the Aztecs fall to 5-2.
