LONG BEACH, Calif. - San Diego State women's water polo team swept the first day of action in The Beach Women's Water Polo Invitational by beating Cal State Bakersfield, 8-5, and The University of Pacific, 10-9, in overtime.
The Aztecs started out strong against Bakersfield, going on a 3-0 run in the first quarter and held a 4-2 lead at the half. Amber Prestegard and Heidi Matsumoto led the Aztecs with two goals each. Casey Finnegan, Dominique Delgado, Monica DeRosier and Holly Hartzell had one goal apiece.
San Diego State came back from a 4-2 half time deficit to beat the University of Pacific in overtime, scoring two goals and shutting out the Tigers in the final quarter of regulation. Finnegan, Prestegard and Hartzell each earned a hat trick, while Delgado added another.
The Aztecs resume pool play tomorrow beginning at 9:10 a.m. when they will face the 49ers of Long Beach State in the championship bracket. Also at 9:10 am, USC will take on UC San Diego. The winners of those games will play at 12:40 pm for the tournament championship.
