LONG BEACH, Calif. - Sixth-ranked San Diego State women's water polo team fell to the University of Southern California, 15-5, Sunday afternoon in the title game of the second annual Long Beach State Invitational after beating Long Beach State, 9-6, Sunday morning.
USC got off to a fast start as they held an 11-2 lead at the half. Although the Aztecs were able to keep them out of the cage in the fourth quarter, it wasn't enough to hold off the second-ranked Trojans. Holly Hartzell and Monica DeRosier each scored two goals, with Lisa Weise adding one.
In the earlier game, SDSU broke away from a 4-3 halftime lead to outscore the fifth-ranked 49ers 4-1 in the third quarter. Hartzell, Heidi Matsumoto, Dominique Delgado and Amber Prestegard scored two goals apiece, while Casey Finnegan scored one. Aztec goalkeeper Heather Stiles was credited with nine saves.
San Diego State advanced to the championship round by beating Cal State Bakersfield, 8-5, and University of Pacific, 10-9 in overtime yesterday during pool play. The Aztecs are now 17-12, 5-6 in MPSF play. The team will face cross-town rival UCSD on Friday.
