IRVINE, CALIF. - No. 5 San Diego State jumped out to a quick lead and used a great defensive effort in the second half to post a 4-2 MPSF victory at No. 14 UC Irvine on Thursday. The Aztecs led 2-0 after the first period and 4-1 at halftime, but were held scoreless in the second half. However, SDSU's defensive effort, led by goalkeeper Ashley Zabel, shutout the Anteaters in the fourth quarter for the win. SDSU improves to 4-1 overall and 1-0 in conference action while UCI falls to 4-4.
Holly Hartzell and Dominique Delgado got the Aztecs started in the first quarter with one goal each. After UCI answered to cut the lead to one in the second, SDSU pulled away with goals by Chelsy Smith and Savanah Kelley. Zabel posted five saves in the cage and Smith contributed to the defense as well with a game high six steals.
The Aztecs continue action next weekend as they travel to the UC Davis Shootout on Feb. 21-22.
