SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - No. 5 San Diego State split its first two games at the UC Santa Barbara Tournament earning a 7-4 victory over No. 14 UC Davis before falling to No. 4 Long Beach State 5-1 in the second game of the day. Sandy Onweller led SDSU to victory in the first game by scoring four goals, but the entire offense was shutdown in the final three quarters against LBSU. The Aztecs are now 10-2 on the season with both losses coming to LBSU.
After falling behind 1-0 to UC Davis, SDSU scored three goals in the second period to hold a 3-2 advantage at halftime. The Aztecs then outscored the Aggies 2-1 in each of the final two quarters to get the final margin. Onweller's four goals in the contest were her second highest total of her career, coming off her career high six goals against Hawai'i on Thursday. Joining Onweller with goals were Savanah Kelley, Rachel Serna, and Holly Hartzell. Ashley Zabel played the entire game in the cage and made six saves.
In the second game on Saturday, the Long Beach State defense stifled the Aztecs. Elana Cervantes scored for the Aztecs in the first quarter as the teams went into the second period tied at 1-1, but LBSU tallied four straight unanswered goals over the next two quarters to earn the win.
SDSU will finish the tournament, which boasts 13 of the top 14 teams in the country, with two games on Sunday with the first coming against the University of Michigan at 8:00 a.m.
