SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - San Diego State defeated two top 10 teams on Sunday to finish with a 3-1 record at the UC Santa Barbara Invitational. No. 5 SDSU earned a 5-3 win over No. 8 University of Michigan in the first game of the day, and finished the tournament with a 6-5 overtime victory against No. 6 Cal-Berkeley. SDSU improves to 12-2 on the season, including 4-2 against top 10 teams.
San Diego State started slow against U of M, falling behind 1-0 after the first period, but posted a 4-1 advantage in the second and third quarters to take control of the game. Ashley Zabel made 12 saves in goal lead the Aztec defense. It was the second game of the season Zabel has made at least 10 saves. Rachel Serna led the offense with two goals, while Sandy Onweller, Chelsy Smith, and Holly Hartzell added the rest of the scoring.
The Aztecs posted their third overtime win of the season against California. SDSU started quickly in this game as they took a 5-1 advantage into the second half. However, Cal shutout the Aztecs in the second half and managed to pull even with four goals to force overtime. SDSU turned the tide in the overtime as Onweller scored in the first half of the extra period, and the Aztec defense held strong to preserve the win. Sara Daseler earned her first victory of the year in the cage by making 12 saves. Onweller finished with three goals, to record her fourth game with at least a hat trick in the Aztecs last six games. Also contributing goals were Savanah Kelley, Dominique Delgado, and Smith.
SDSU will travel to No. 3 Stanford and No. 12 Long Beach State this weekend for conference matchups. The Aztecs are 2-0 in MPSF action this season.
