SAN DIEGO - San Diego State earned two victories in its first day of play at the UCSD Invitational as they defeated No. 20 Cal Baptist 6-5 in the first game of the day and finished with a 4-2 win over No. 11 UC-Santa Barbara. SDSU, ranked No. 5 in the AWPCA poll, was led by senior Holly Hartzell in game one as she scored three goals. Senior Ashley Zabel recorded 13 saves in the second game to propel SDSU to victory.
San Diego State had to come from behind in the early game against Cal Baptist. SDSU went into halftime up 3-2, but Cal Baptist posted a 3-1 advantage in the third period to take a 5-4 lead. The Aztecs stepped up the defense down the stretch and scored two unanswered goals to earn the win. Three other Aztecs scored other than Hartzell as Savanah Kelley, Sandy Onweller and Chelsy Smith all tallied one goal each. Zabel played the entire game in the cage and made four saves to earn the win.
SDSU kept up the solid defense led by Zabel in its second game holding UC-Santa Barbara to just two goals. The two teams went into halftime tied at 1-1, but SDSU used a 3-0 third period to secure the victory. Hartzell, Smith, Onweller, and Kelley again provided the SDSU offense with one goal each.
The Aztecs will play on Sunday in the winners pool against No. 5 Loyola Marymount at 1 p.m. and No. 4 Long Beach State at 5 p.m. at the UCSD Canyonview Pool.
