LONG BEACH, Calif. - No. 5 San Diego State earned two victories to open the Long Beach State tournament on Saturday, defeating No. 17 UC Irvine 6-5 and University of Pacific 10-4. The Aztecs used a well-balanced attack with 10 different players scoring goals and all three goalkeepers contributing to the cause. SDSU improves to 22-6 on the season.
The Aztecs jumped out to a 4-1 halftime lead against Irvine and the reserves held on down the stretch for the victory. SDSU's captains and leading scorers on the year, Sandy Onweller and Holly Hartzell, both tallied two goals. Junior Dominique Delgado scored in her fifth straight game and Sarah Farris posted the final score. Delgado has seven goals during her scoring streak after opening the season with four goals in the first 22 games. Ashley Zabel and Sara Daseler split time in the cage and combined for 12 saves.
The freshman class took control in the win over Pacific. Freshman Ashley Reta led the offense as she posted the first hat trick of her career, while freshmen Stacy Werner and Sarah Kilgore led the defense. Werner recorded a SDSU season high seven steals, while Kilgore made her first start in the cage and made seven saves. Werner and fellow freshman Rachelle Denaro also scored for SDSU. Finishing out the scoring was Taylor Cranney with two, Donna Stivers, Sarah Farris and Monica DeRosier.
SDSU will play two more games on Sunday, opening with Cal State Northridge at 8:30 am before finishing the tournament against undefeated and No. 1 ranked USC at 1 pm.
