SAN DIEGO - San Diego State senior Armando Carrascosa won the 76th annual San Diego District Men's Open Tournament in early September. Carrascosa defeated five seeded opponents to take the title.
The San Diego District Championship is held annually and features San Diego's finest tennis talent at the Balboa Tennis Club.
"It was a very good win for Armando. I'm excited to see Armando playing well," said head coach Gene Carswell.
Carrascosa, who saw limited action for the Aztecs due to injury last season, lost just one set in five matches to claim the open title.
Carrascosa received a bye in the round of 64 and went on defeat Jeff Ray, the sixth seed, of San Diego in the round of 32, by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
In the round of 16, the Mexicali Baja California, Mexico native took on the ninth seed, Fernando Rodriguez, and won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Later, Carrascosa's quarterfinal draw was the fourth seeded player, Adrian Pena. Carrascosa won the match, 6-2, 6-0.
In the semifinals, the number two seed, Brett Condon of Oceanside, Calif., awaited Carrascosa and was defeated, 6-2, 6-1.
After winning four matches against seeded opponents, Carrascosa's competition in the final round was the tournament's top-seeded player Andrew Wakefield. Unlike Carrascosa's first four opponents, Wakefield took the first set, 6-4. But Carrascosa came back and won the next two frames, 6-2 and 7-6, to win the 2004 championship.
Carswell added, "Armando won a big tournament here in San Diego. He won a good three set match in the finals. Wakefield, the opponent he defeated in the finals, was a former number two player for Purdue and a nationally ranked doubles player. It's exciting to see him on the right track as we're going into the All-American Tournament."
