LOS ANGELES - The seventh-ranked San Diego State water polo team could not hold onto a first quarter lead as second-ranked Southern California defeated the Aztecs in SDSU's Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener, 12-7, at McDonald's Swim Stadium. The loss drops the Aztecs to 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the MPSF, while the Women of Troy improve to 6-1 on the year and 2-0 in conference play.
The Aztecs jumped out of the gate early against the defending national champions by taking a 3-2 lead after one period. But Southern California outscored the Aztecs 5-1 in the second quarter and never looked back.
SDSU received two goals apiece from junior Rachel Serna (Coronado, Calif./Coronado HS), sophomore Stacy Werner (Lodi, Calif./Lodi HS) and freshman Becca Ur (Lompoc, Calif./Cabrillo HS). Senior Sara Farris (Federal Way, Wash./Golden West CC) chipped in with a goal as well.
With her two goals, Serna has scored in every game this season and has a total of 11 on the year.
Sophomore goalkeeper Sarah Kilgore (Rossmoor, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) recorded eight saves for SDSU.
The Aztecs are back in action tomorrow when they play at UC Santa Barbara. Game time is set for noon.
