SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - San Diego State took 11th place at the Gaucho Invitational by defeating 11th-ranked Michigan, 6-5, in double overtime at Campus Pool. With the win, the Aztecs improve to 5-6 on the year after going 3-2 in the 24 team invitational tournament.
San Diego State fell behind early, trailing 2-0 after one period. But in the second quarter, SDSU fought its way back into the game after scoring three goals and found itself down one, 4-3, at the halfway mark.
After each scoring a goal in the third, the Aztecs netted the lone goal of the fourth quarter to force the game into overtime.
In the extra period, both nationally ranked squads came up empty and a second overtime session was needed.
It was in the second overtime that San Diego State broke through and won the game, 6-5.
The 10th-ranked Aztecs received a hat trick from senior Monica DeRosier and single goals from Sara Farris, Rachel Serna and Elana Cervantes. Goalkeeper Sarah Kilgore recorded seven saves in a winning effort.
SDSU will be back in action when it takes on Pacific in Stockton, Calif., on March 5 and California the next day in Berkeley, Calif. Both games are slated for a noon start.
