SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State water polo team closed out the UCSD Invitational with two losses on Sunday at Canyonview Pool. In the first of two games, the eighth-ranked Aztecs fell to No. 5 Long Beach State in a close one, 7-6. In the second game, fourth-ranked Loyola Marymount scored 12 goals to register a 12-5 victory. The pair of losses evens SDSU's record to 2-2.
In the first game of the championship bracket, the Aztecs found themselves tied at five after three quarters. But the 49ers were able to score two in the fourth period to claim the win. In a losing effort, SDSU received a goal apiece from Savanah Kelley, Stacy Werner, Elana Cervantes, Rachel Serna, Ashley Reta and Becca Ur.
Against Loyola Marymount, the Aztecs fell behind early, trailing 7-2 after two periods of play. Despite the loss, Werner, Serna and Ur recorded their second goals of the day, while Cia Cobb and Sara Farris each added a goal apiece.
For the two-day event, Serna scored nine goals in four games, while Reta had five and Cervantes recorded three.
SDSU returns to action on Feb. 18 when it takes on second-ranked Southern California in Los Angeles for its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener.
