SAN DIEGO - No. 14 San Diego State defeated 17th-ranked Arizona State, 11-5, at the Ray and Joan Kroc Community Center Sunday afternoon on Senior Day. The team's three seniors, Dominique Delgado, Monica DeRosier and Sara Farris, were honored before the game and then went on to help the Aztecs improve their record to 14-16 overall and 3-9 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation. The Sun Devils, meanwhile, fall to 9-19 on the season and 3-9 in conference play.
The first quarter saw the home team shut out the visitors, 4-0. Rachel Serna tallied the first two goals of the game for SDSU when she scored off a pass from Elana Cervantes during a six-on-five opportunity and then put a shot past Sun Devil goalkeeper Caylinn Wallace from six meters out. Savanah Kelley added to the Aztecs' lead when she took a pass from Delgado and found the back of the net with 2:36 remaining in the opening stanza. Less than a minute later, DeRosier drew a penalty that allowed Serna to notch her third goal of the game on a four-meter penalty shot.
The second quarter featured an offensive outburst by both squads. Cervantes increased SDSU's lead to five when she fired a shot into the net after Wallace was ejected. The Aztec goal then led to four unanswered goals by Arizona State. The Sun Devils got on the scoreboard when Tessa Wyborny scored at the 5:59 mark. Katie Hedley trimmed the SDSU lead to 5-2 when she put a shot past Aztec goalkeeper Sarah Kilgore, who made a season-high 11 saves. Then Raelyn Ritchie got going for ASU. Ritchie scored the next three Sun Devil goals in less than a minute to give ASU five in the quarter. In between Ritchie's second and third goals, DeRosier drew another ejection and during the six-on-five chance, SDSU drew a penalty that led to Serna scoring her fourth of the game and second on a penalty shot. Cervantes closed out the half with a goal from two meters out to give SDSU a two-goal cushion.
After a second quarter in which eight goals were scored, the third period was just the opposite as only one goal was recorded. With 1:28 remaining and the shot clock running out, Cervantes received a pass from DeRosier and scored from nine meters out to give the Aztecs an 8-5 lead going into the final period.
With 5:28 left in her final home game, DeRosier scored at two meters for her 11th goal of the season. Then as the Sun Devils were attacking, Stacy Werner stole the ball and raced down the length of the pool and found the back of the net to increase SDSU's lead. A minute later, DeRosier was on the receiving end of a pass from Cervantes and scored her second of the game from two meters out to give the contest its final score.
The Aztecs will return to action April 28 when they play at the MPSF Championships in Berkeley, Calif. Game time and opponent information will be available later in the week.
