BERKELEY, Calif. - Goalkeeper Sarah Kilgore made a season-high 13 saves and No. 14 San Diego State avenged two earlier losses to sixth-ranked UC Santa Barbara with a 7-4 triumph over the Gauchos (15-13) in the first round of the MPSF Tournament in Berkeley, Calif., on Thursday afternoon. The 10th-seeded Aztecs (15-16) will face second-seeded and defending national champion, USC (21-3), in a quarterfinal match at University of California's Spieker Aquatic Complex at 11:30 a.m. Friday.
SDSU jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first quarter and extended its advantage to 4-1 at halftime. Three more goals in the third quarter gave the Aztecs all the offense it would need and Kilgore did the rest in net.
The sophomore played all 28 minutes while facing 17 UCSB shots on goal. Kilgore's 13 saves were the most stops in a game since she made 16 last season against Cal Baptist.
Dominique Delgado, Monica DeRosier and Rachel Serna tallied two goals apiece to lead SDSU's offensive attack. Serna's 59th and 60th goals, respectively, moved the junior past two-time U.S. Olympian Heather Moody and into 10th-place in Aztec history for goals in a season.
Stacy Werner had the other goal for SDSU, which fell to the Gauchos twice in Santa Barbara earlier this year. The Aztecs dropped a 10-9 overtime decision on March 25 at the UCSB Gaucho Invitational and fell, 7-2, on Feb. 19.
The winners of the SDSU-USC and (3) Stanford-(6) California games will face off at 3:15 p.m. Saturday, while the losers will play at 2 p.m. the same day.
