BERKELEY, Calif. - San Diego State ended its 2005 season with an 8-3 win over Cal State Northridge in the seventh-place game at the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships at Spieker Aquatic Complex in Berkeley, Calif. The 13th-ranked Aztecs finish the year with a record of 16-18 after splitting two games at the conference tournament.
The Aztecs controlled the game from the outset, scoring four goals in the first half and shutting out the Matadors during the first 14 minutes of the game. Today was just the second time all season that SDSU has held an opponent scoreless in the opening half. The Aztecs last accomplished the feat in their 17-2 win over Pomona-Pitzer on April 10.
In the third quarter, SDSU continued to keep the pressure on and never looked back as it scored three goals in the period, while only allowing a single CSUN goal.
The Matadors broke through with two goals in the final period, but it proved to be not enough as the Aztecs found the back of the net on one occasion to give the contest its final score.
Goalkeeper Sarah Kilgore continued her solid play as she made seven saves in net for San Diego State. She now has 222 saves on the season to move past current volunteer assistant coach Curran Teigen for fourth-most saves in a season.
Offensively, Monica DeRosier tallied three goals, Rachel Serna added two and Elana Cervantes, Susan Stivers and Stacy Werner chipped in with a goal apiece to pace the Aztecs.
Serna's pair of goals gives her 64 on the season, good for an eighth-place tie with Larisa Baltgalvis for most goals in a season.
