WOODLAND, Calif. - A school-record six San Diego State water polo student-athletes were named to the Academic All-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation team for the 2005 women's water polo season. The six selections tied Arizona State for third most in the conference with Stanford (eight) and Hawaii (seven) leading the way.
Monica DeRosier (San Diego, Calif./Patrick Henry HS), a liberal studies major, completed her collegiate career with a grade point average (GPA) of 3.76. Her GPA was sixth highest in the league and tops on the team. DeRosier completed the 2005 season with 17 goals scored, 12 steals and 33 ejects drawn in 29 games. In the season finale against Cal State Northridge, she scored three goals to secure the Aztecs a seventh-place finish at the MPSF Championship in Berkeley, Calif.
Joining DeRosier on the squad was fellow senior and co-captain Dominique Delgado (Lompoc, Calif./Cabrillo HS). The honor is her second consecutive after accumulating a GPA of 3.12 in criminal justice. Delgado finished her SDSU career as the program's all-time leader in assists with 126 and ranks in the top-10 in three other categories. For the season, she started 31 of the 33 games in which she played and scored 19 goals and dished out 37 assists. Delgado also won the Most Valuable Player award in the Aztecs' fourth straight Harper Cup victory over UC San Diego.
Cia Cobb (Yorba Linda, Calif./Long Beach CC) was the third member selected to the team after earning a GPA of 3.31 while studying sociology. The junior utility player made six starts in 31 games and found the back of the net on seven different occasions. Back on April 16 at the Long Beach State Invitational, Cobb netted three goals to lift the Aztecs over Cal State Bakersfield, 16-4.
Ashley Reta (Yorba Linda, Calif./El Dorado HS), earned a GPA of 3.37 while studying interior design. The sophomore driver finished the season with 17 goals, 13 steals and seven assists in 31 games. Reta scored multiple goals on three different occasions and posted a game-high four goals in SDSU's 16-4 win over Cal State Bakersfield at the LBSU Tournament in April.
Goalkeeper Sarah Kilgore (Roosmoor, Calif./Los Alamitos HS) was selected to the team after recording a 3.05 GPA in history/Spanish. The sophomore started all 32 games in which she played and made 225 saves, good for fourth all-time on SDSU's single season saves chart. Kilgore also tallied the third most steals on the squad with 40. Her best game of the year came in the Aztecs' first round upset of then-No. 6 UC Santa Barbara at the MPSF Championship. Kilgore stopped 15 shots in SDSU's 7-4 win.
Becca Ur (Lompoc, Calif./Cabrillo HS) turned in a GPA of 3.69 while studying psychology in her first year on Montezuma Mesa. The freshman started 21 of the 30 games in which she played and saw her season end prematurely when an eye injury forced her to miss the conference championships. For the season, she scored 15 goals, recorded 15 steals, handed out 10 assists and drew a team-high 63 ejections.
The Academic All-MPSF award is designed to recognize the outstanding academic accomplishments of women's water polo student-athletes during the current season. The criteria include having a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA, completing one full academic year at the member institution and participating in at least 50 percent of the team's games.
The Aztecs finished the 2005 campaign ranked No. 11 in the country.
