SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's water polo freshman Anna Gonzales has been selected to play in the 2005 Speedo Top 40 Tournament as announced by USA Water Polo. The fourth annual event features the top 40 women's water polo players from the United States Olympic, junior and senior national teams as well as student-athletes from the collegiate and high school ranks.
Gonzales, in her first season at SDSU, is a decorated defender from Clovis West High School in Fresno, Calif. At Clovis West, she was a two-time All-American, a member of the 2004 National Youth "A" team, a two-time all-Valley selection and a 2003 all-Tri-City Athletic Conference first team member.
"This is a tremendous honor for Anna. She will have the opportunity to test herself against the best players in the nation," San Diego State head coach Carin Crawford said. "I'm confident the coaching staff will recognize her as one of the top defenders in the U.S."
Those selected to the tournament will split into four teams and is designed to give players an opportunity to display their talent against the nation's best women's water polo athletes. The tournament also gives national team coaches the chance to evaluate players for the 2008 Olympic Games.
The three-day event is scheduled to take place Nov. 4-6 at the National Training Center in Los Alamitos, Calif.
