SAN DIEGO - Ninth-ranked San Diego State dropped a 7-3 decision to Hawai'i in its home and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation opener Thursday afternoon at The Salvation Army Kroc Center. With the loss, the Aztecs see their record fall to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in the MPSF, while the Rainbow Wahine even their record at 4-4 and 2-2 in league play.
The contest started well for SDSU as sophomore Becca Ur gave the Aztecs a 1-0 lead with 5:39 remaining in the first quarter. No less than two minutes later, Hawai'i received goals from Iefke Van Belkum and Kelly Mason to give the visitors a 2-1 advantage with the period winding down. Then at two meters, senior Cassie Zebisch drew a penalty on Van Belkum giving SDSU a 4-meter penalty shot. Facing a one-on-one opportunity, junior Stacy Werner took full advantage of the situation and netted her fourth goal of the season to knot the score at 2-2.
Senior Rachel Serna opened the second quarter with her team-leading eighth goal of year from the left side of the pool at the 5:04 mark. Unfortunately, that would be the last time San Diego State would find the back of the net as the Rainbow Wahine shut down the SDSU attack and scored five unanswered goals over the course of two-plus quarters to give the match its final score.
The Aztecs will continue their MPSF schedule Friday, Feb. 24, as they travel north to face No. 19 CS Northridge. Match time is set for 3 p.m. PST at Matador Pool.
