IRVINE, Calif. - San Diego State lost in the consolation bracket of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship to California, 7-5, Saturday morning at Anteater Aquatics Complex on the campus of UC Irvine. The Aztecs received three goals from Stacy Werner, but it wasn't enough as they fall to 21-12 on the season.
SDSU played even with the Golden Bears as each school scored once in the opening seven minutes of the match. California created separation from the Aztecs in the second period as it scored on two different occasions to take a 3-1 lead into halftime.
In the third quarter, San Diego State returned the favor as it kept the Golden Bears off the scoreboard while posting two goals of its own to knot the score at three going into the final period.
The fourth wound up being the decisive quarter as California outscored the Aztecs, 4-2, to pocket the victory and advance to the tournament's fifth-place match.
Werner posted her 11th multiple-goal contest and her fourth hat trick of 2006 in a losing effort. Also tallying goals for SDSU were freshmen Anna Gonzales and Ashling Taylor. Goalkeeper Sarah Kilgore registered six saves.
The Aztecs conclude the MPSF Championship, Sunday, April 30, against UCI. The seventh-place match is set for an 11 a.m. PDT start in Irvine, Calif.
