SAN DIEGO - San Diego State men's golf coach Ryan Donovan has been awarded a new three-year contract, Aztec Director of Athletics Jeff Schemmel announced on Friday.
"I'm very excited to continue to be a part of San Diego State and this program," Donovan said. "I'm very loyal to this school and I'm honored to receive this extension.
"We have made great strides with our program in my four years as head coach and we are poised to have another successful season."
The former Aztec student-athlete has built up an impressive résumé over the course of his four seasons since taking over the program in the fall of 2003, including the recent recognition of the SDSU men's golf program by Golf Digest as the 12th-best for incoming student-athletes with dreams of playing golf professionally.
Since taking over the reigns of the Scarlet and Black, SDSU has had 35 top-10 tournament finishes, 24 top-five tournament finishes, seven team titles, four NCAA regional selections and two NCAA championship appearances.
"We are delighted to be able to sign one of our brightest stars to a new contract," Schemmel said. "We are looking forward to Ryan leading us to great success both in the Mountain West Conference and nationally."
Last season, the Aztec men's golf team reached the NCAA Regionals for the ninth consecutive campaign and won three tournaments; the UH District 7 Fall Shootout, The Callaway Golf Invitational and the Fresno State Lexus Classic
Individually, Donovan helped mentor junior Aaron Goldberg and sophomore Adam Porzak to individual medalist honors. Goldberg went on to capture the school's first PING All-America honor since 2001.
Prior to coaching at SDSU, Donovan was a four-year member of the Aztec golf squad and returned to his alma mater after a stint in the professional ranks.
Donovan competed for the Aztecs from 1997-2001 and has participated in a variety of national tournaments like the U.S. Amateur in 1996 and 1999, as well as the 2001 British Amateur. In 2001, Donovan also competed in the Golden State Tour and followed in 2002 by participating in the Gateway Tour.
A native of Yorba Linda, Calif. Donovan was a four-time all-Sunset League performer at Esperanza High School in Orange County and graduated from SDSU with a degree in public administration.
