SAN JOSE, Calif. - Senior forward Jackie Ragudos scored her third goal of the season with an assist from junior midfielder Alicia Piz to lead the San Diego State women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over San Jose State on Wednesday night at Spartan Stadium. With the help of another standout performance from freshman goalkeeper Aubree Southwick, who recorded her fourth shutout, SDSU improves its road record to 2-0-1, 3-2-2 overall.
Ragudos, who was held scoreless in 2006, scored the Aztecs' lone goal at the 27:26 mark when she connected on a cross from Piz for the second time this season.
"This was a really good road victory," head coach Mike Friesen said. "We were challenged throughout with some of the formations San Jose State showed us. You have to give them (SJSU) credit because they were fighting hard to get a victory.
"I was happy with the way our women responded to the challenges that come on the road and how they kept their focus."
Southwick, with tremendous help once again from her back line, continued her stellar initial campaign making five saves and lowering her goals against average to 0.54. Southwick's four shutouts in seven games matches the same number SDSU had all of last season.
In the first half, the two teams went back and forth on each other's side of the field with San Jose State holding the slight edge in shots, 8-7.
In the second half, San Diego State continued to keep the pressure on the Spartans with Ragudos, senior Jessica Girdner and sophomore Megan Konishi each attempting shots on net. Ragudos just missed registering her second two-goal game of the season when she hit the post from 10 yards out with seven minutes left in the game.
The Spartans remain winless on the season, 0-4-2, and have now been blanked four consecutive games.
The Scarlet and Black continue its four-game road trip on Sunday against UC Santa Barbara. Kick off between the Aztecs and the Gauchos is set for 6 p.m.
