LAS VEGAS - Junior Haley Partridge scored her first goal of the season and sophomore goalie Alicia Lugo made three saves to lead UNLV to the 1-0 victory over the San Diego State women's soccer team on Sunday in Las Vegas, Nev.
Behind Lugo's seventh shutout of the year, UNLV improves to 6-3-5, 1-0-1 MWC, while SDSU suffers its first conference loss and drops to 6-6-2 overall, 1-1-0 MWC.
"I'm really proud of the way our women played on this tough road trip," head coach Mike Friesen said. "We played good enough today to get a point, but on the road sometimes that is not possible. I was extremely pleased with our energy level against UNLV after playing up in altitude against Air Force on Friday.
"Now we have to put this game behind us and get ready to play a very good BYU team on short rest on Thursday."
SDSU controlled the pace of the game by keeping the ball in UNLV territory for the majority of the contest and owning the 4-3 advantage in the shots on net category.
SDSU had some prime opportunities to score throughout the game but were unable to push through a score. In the 13th minute, sophomore Millie Allen missed recording her third goal of 2007 when she hit the crossbar and freshman Lauren Marquez also couldn't record her first-career score when she hit the crossbar in the 81st minute.
Sophomore Heather Vandevanter, who scored her initial tally of the year on Friday, led the team with two shots on net with both attempts being gathered up by Lugo.
The Rebels were able to score their lone goal in the 44th minute when senior Armani Rice shot a cross from the left sideline that Partridge was able to connect on for a header that just got past SDSU freshman goalkeeper Aubree Southwick.
The Aztecs return home on Thursday for the first of three games at the SDSU Sports Deck against No. 14 BYU. Kickoff for the match up between the Cougars and Aztecs is set for 4 p.m. The game will be televised on The Mtn.-The Mountain West Sports Network with Bill Riley and Tammy Blackburn on the call.
