SAN DIEGO - The sixth-ranked San Diego State water polo team defeated the Aztec alumni, 8-5, on Saturday afternoon. Four players scored a pair of goals to guide SDSU to its first victory over the alumni in three years.
Senior co-captain Becca Ur and sophomore Jamie Vessey each scored two goals on four shot attempts. Junior All-American Jenna Schuster recorded two tallies and a team-leading five steals, while senior Tiphanie Elliott found the back of the net twice.
Junior transfer Katie Bentley had nine saves for SDSU and senior Heather Fenske added four stops.
San Diego State struck first with two goals in the first quarter. The alumni were able to get on the board in the second quarter, but trailed 4-2 at the half. Each team had one tally following the break, but SDSU out scored the alumni 3-2 in the final eight minutes of play for the 8-5 victory.
Kelly Falcone, Monica DeRosier, Sandy Onweller, Stacy Werner and Savanah Kelley each scored for the alumni, while Ashley Zabel had seven saves.
SDSU opens its 2008 campaign at home on Thursday, Feb. 7, when Hartwick College makes its way to the Aztec Aquaplex for a 2 p.m. showdown.
