WOODLAND, Calif. - San Diego State water polo teammates Anna Gonzales (Fresno, Calif.), Jenna Schuster (Upland, Calif.) and Sarah Brady (Los Alamitos, Calif.) have captured all-Mountain Pacific Sports Federation accolades for their performance this season, the league office announced Wednesday. Gonzales and Schuster were both second-team choices, while Brady was named to the freshman team. The all-conference honors are the first career awards for Gonzales and Brady, and the second for Schuster.
Gonzales, a junior utility player, has 71 goals to her credit this season, which is second on the squad. She has scored multiple goals in 20 games and has logged at least one tally in 29 out of 35 contests this year. Gonzales netted a team season-high five goals on two different occasions, with both coming against Cal State Northridge on Feb. 9 and April 13. The Fresno, Calif., native currently ranks seventh on SDSU's all-time charts with 175 career goals. A solid all-around player, Gonzales is also fifth in school history with 100 career assists and 10th in steals (125).
A junior driver, Schuster leads the Aztecs with 76 goals this season. She has found the back of the cage in 32 out of 35 contests this year and has a team-high 25 multiple-goal performances. With her tally against California on April 27, Schuster extended her current scoring streak to 11 games and is now in sole possession of fifth place in the Aztec record book with 184 career goals. The Upland, Calif., native recently earned MPSF all-tournament honors after scoring eight goals in four games at the conference championships.
Brady had a stellar freshman campaign notching 15 goals, 17 assists and 18 steals. The driver from Los Alamitos, Calif., appeared in all 35 contests and put together a six-game scoring streak (March 15-27), which included three straight two-goal performances.
SDSU (29-6), ranked fourth in the latest national poll released April 23, recently hosted the MPSF Championships (April 24-27) where it posted a 3-1 record en route to a fifth-place finish.
San Diego State received its second consecutive at-large berth to the NCAA tournament and will return to action on Friday, May 9, at Avery Aquatic Center when it takes on UC Davis at 6:45 p.m. (PDT) in first round action.
