SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's basketball team will play host to Utah on Wednesday night, Jan. 16, at Cox Arena in what will be an important Mountain West Conference game for both schools. The game will feature two of the three squads with unbeaten records in league play with the Aztecs sitting at 2-0 and the Utes having won its lone MWC contest nearly two weeks ago. The contest is set for an 8 p.m. PST start.
SDSU comes into the game having matched its best 16-game record in the last 41 seasons with a 12-4 overall record and an unblemished conference mark after traveling to Albuquerque, N.M., and defeating New Mexico at The Pit on Saturday night. The victory snapped the Lobos' seven-game overall winning streak and their 10-game winning streak at home.
The Aztecs' 2-0 league start is just the fifth such occurrence to a conference campaign in the last 18 seasons and the first 2-0 MWC record since 2004-05. On Wednesday, San Diego State will look to improve to 3-0 in league action for the first time during the Steve Fisher era and the first time since the 1984-85 WAC season.
Utah, meanwhile, is 10-4 overall having defeated Air Force, 58-36, on Jan. 5 and emerged victorious its last time out vs. Dixie State, 83-64, on Jan. 9. Wednesday's game will be the Utes' first game away from Huntsman Center since a 61-59 setback at Gonzaga on New Year's Eve.
The match-up will also feature two teams that were picked to finish in the upper half of the Mountain West. The MWC's preseason media poll released in October had Utah finishing third with two first-place votes and the Aztecs in a tie for fourth place and one championship vote.
At halftime of the game, the TNT Dunk Squad, which combines gymnastics, high-flying dunks and upbeat showmanship to captivate audiences of every age, will perform. The members of the group have performed at every NBA arena and have made hundreds of NCAA, corporate and international appearances.
