SAN DIEGO - Quinton Watkins, a shooting guard from Dominguez High School in Compton, Calif., has enrolled in classes at San Diego State, head coach Steve Fisher announced on Friday. The 6-3, 175-pound Watkins will have four years of eligibility remaining beginning with the 2008-09 season and is able to begin practicing with the team immediately.
"We are excited to announce Quinton Watkins has been admitted to San Diego State," head coach Steve Fisher said. "He is someone we recruited very hard, is a terrific young man and an excellent player who will be a great addition to our team."
A highly decorated player, Watkins, who originally signed with Illinois out of high school following his senior season in 2007, was ranked among the top shooting guards in the nation after graduating from Dominguez High. Rivals.com rated him as a four-out-of-five star player, the 96th-best player on its Rivals 150 list, the 19th-best shooting guard in America and the ninth-best player at any position in California.
As a senior at Dominguez, Watkins averaged 19.7 points, 4.2 rebounds and 3.0 assists for a Dons team that finished with a 22-8 overall record, including a 9-1 mark in the San Gabriel Valley League. Watkins guided his team to the semifinals of the Division IAA CIF-Southern Section Boys Basketball Championships before falling to the eventual champions.
