SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's golf team will head to South Carolina to participate in the first annual Rees Jones Intercollegiate. The tournament, which is hosted by Michigan State, is scheduled for Nov. 3-4 at the Haig Point Club in Daufuskie Island, S.C.
The teams will play a practice round on Nov. 2, then 36 holes of tournament play on Nov. 3 and the final 18 holes on Nov. 4. Live results will be available online beginning on Nov. 3 at www.golfstat.com.
Head coach Ryan Donovan will take the fivesome of Johan Carlsson, Andrew Cooley, Bryan Martin, David Palm and J.J. Spaun to compete against Eastern Michigan, Georgia State, Idaho, Jackson State, Methodist, Michigan State, South Carolina, Tennessee State, Troy and Tulsa.
The tournament was originally scheduled for Sept. 7-8, but severe weather conditions due to Hurricane Hanna forced the postponement of the Aztecs' fall season opener.
Haig Point's golf course debuted at 28th in the country by Golf Digest and 68th in the world by Golf Magazine when it first opened in 1986. The course recently underwent a $5.5 million restoration and renovation overseen by Rees Jones and his design associate Greg Muirhead.
Recent changes added length to the course and it now stretches 7,350 yards from the tips. The renovation also altered various features that make the Carolina Lowlands layout a better test for players of all abilities. The course record of 71, held by PGA Tour Professional Matt Kuchar, is higher than most courses of similar stature.
SDSU is coming off a sixth place finish at the Sycuan Collegiate Invitational, Nov. 20-21. The Aztecs completed their three-day home tournament with a score of 12-under par (290-275-287--852).
Carlsson was San Diego State's top performer over three rounds and finished tied for 11th place. The sophomore shot a 1-over 73 in the final round and ultimately entered the clubhouse with a 5-under par 211.
Following the trip east, SDSU will return to San Diego and then take off for Hawaii a few days later to play at the Turtle Bay Resort Invitational, Nov. 10-12.
