SAN DIEGO - Former Aztec men's golfer Scott Piercy was one of 25 Nationwide Tour players awarded a 2009 PGA TOUR Card on Sunday. The honor stems from Piercy placing ninth among the top-25 money winners of the season.
"I'm really excited about going to the PGA TOUR," Piercy said. "It's like a childhood dream. I've never thought of it like that but now that it's here it was something I dreamed about doing. I guess dreams do come true."
Piercy secured his card after finishing in 31st place at the season-ending Nationwide Tour Championship at TPC Craig Ranch near Dallas, Texas.
In 2008, Piercy won the Preferred Health Systems Wichita Open and the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic and finished in the top 25 six times. Additionally, Piercy made 13 cuts in 19 events.
In his career, Piercy has earned $186,812 in 20 PGA TOUR events.
A three-year letterwinner at San Diego State from 1998-2001, Piercy's best season for the Aztecs came as a junior during the 1999-2000 campaign when he led the squad with a 72.55 stroke average, while capturing two individual titles and finishing in the top 20 on seven other occasions en route to a spot on the all-Mountain West Conference team. As a sophomore, he also posted SDSU's lowest score (78-78) at the 1999 NCAA Championships, the Aztecs' first appearance in the tournament since 1982.
During his playing career on Montezuma Mesa, Piercy was a teammate of current SDSU head coach Ryan Donovan.
