OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - San Diego State swimmers added four more new entries into the school record book as they completed action at the 2009 MWC Swimming and Diving Championships in Oklahoma City. Aztec second-year head coach Mike Shrader was honored as the women's co-Coach of the Year at the conclusion of the championships as he led his team to a sixth-place finish, its highest since it ended the meet in the same position in both 2000 and 2001. The team's total of 375 points was its best in the 10-year history of the MWC championship event.
Among the records set on Saturday, the big story was freshman Jeanette Engzell, who broke her own SDSU mark in the 200 breaststroke by over four seconds. In the process, she finished first in the event in 2:14.06 and became only the second Aztec to win a final in the 10-year history of the conference championship meet. The first to do so was Meghan Casillan, who won both the 100 and 200 backstroke in 2000.
Behind Engzell in the 200 breaststroke, Jessica Morrill turned in the fourth-fastest time in school history with a mark of 2:20.82 in the prelims.
In the 200 backstroke, junior Elena Karpeeva set an Aztec record by becoming the first Aztec swimmer to record a time under two minutes in the race (1:57.76). During the prelims, teammates Shaida Solimani (2:00.68) and Kelsey Diener (2:00.94) turned in what would be the second- and third-best times in the event ever for an SDSU swimmer.
Freshman Elisabeth Krueger finished sixth in the 200 butterfly and established an Aztec record in the process with a time of 2:03.29. Allison Hall went 2:03.74 to place seventh and her time of 2:03.69 in the prelims goes down as the seventh-fastest time by an Aztec.
The 400 freestyle relay also saw the Aztecs set a San Diego State record as the quartet of Alexis McCoy, Alex Peters, Kyla Power and Shaida Solimani swam a 3:27.60.
Three Aztecs competed in the 1,650 freestyle race although no SDSU swimmer had gone that distance during the 2008-09 season. Even though no new school mark was set, all three recorded times that will enter the books among the top 10 in Aztec history, That threesome includes Bojana Duric (third fastest - 17:02.95), Ashley Flynn (fifth-fastest - 17:17.57) and Kyla Power (ninth-fastest - 17:30.72).
Over the course of the four-day MWC Swimming and Diving Championships this week, San Diego State established a total of 13 new school records. Those marks came in five relays, seven individual races and one diving event.
