SAN DIEGO - Members of the San Diego State men's tennis team are participating in the 120th Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament which began on Thursday, March 5, at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
In the first round of 128, the Aztecs Jordan Colman and Luis Rattenhuber defeated Brian Garber and Brian Locklear of Boston College, 6-2, 6-3. In the same round, Michael Beron and Matthew Tosches downed Levi Brent-Lee and Aleksandar Elezovic of Toledo, 6-2, 6-2. Andre Feliz and Tim Schulz van Endert overpowered Sven Burus and Gursher Harika of Toledo, 6-4, 6-2. Bartosz Golas and Juan Gomez, rounding out the SDSU team members in the round of 128, took down Skyler Engel and Leonardo Henriques of Toledo, 6-0, 6-3.
Beginning competition in the round of 64 after a first round bye, San Diego State head coach Gene Carswell and assistant coach Ryan Redondo enjoyed success in their first outing. The Aztec coaching duo defeated Greg Failla, a former ATP tour player, and Duke Miller, 6-4, 6-1. Also competing in the round of 64 was Golas and Gomez who picked up a decision against No. 3 K.C. Corkery, a former Stanford standout, and Parker Kelley, 6-2, 6-1. Feliz and Schulz van Endert fell to Gregory Hirshman and Blake Muller of Stanford, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Colman and Rattenhuber picked up a victory over No. 8 Michael Lin and Todd Nelson, a former ATP tour standout, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3.
In the round of 32, Carswell and Redondo continued their successful streak with a win over Chris Kearney and Daniel Nguyen, 7-6 (4), 7-5. Kearney is a former University of North Carolina standout while Nguyen is a current member of the USC tennis team. Also enjoying success in the round of 32 was Golas and Gomez, who defeated Matt Brooklyn and Michael Look of UCLA, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Beron and Tosches were not as fortunate, falling in a tough fight to California coach Tyler Browne and partner, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (6), 6-1. Colman and Rattenhuber came up short to No. 9 Mohamed Abid and Nicolas Meister of UCLA, 6-4, 6-4.
The tournament is the second-oldest tennis event in the country and was first held in 1890 at The Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, Calif. According to the official website, the event was created to promote the sale of real estate on the Monterey peninsula. The original concept pitted the best players from the East versus those from the West.
Past winners of the tournament include Jack Kramer, Ted Schroeder, Bobby Riggs, Pancho Segura, Don Budge, Tony Trabert, Stan Smith, Bob Lutz, Arthur Ashe, Dennis Ralston and John McEnroe.
Teams that are expected to participate in the 2009 competition include Pepperdine, UCLA, USC, California, Stanford, Fresno State, UC San Diego, Rice, Notre Dame, Villanova and Boston College.
