SAN DIEGO - Members of the San Diego State men's tennis team participated in the 120th Pacific Coast Doubles Tournament which began on Thursday, March 5, at the La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club.
The last two Aztec teams standing made it to the round of 16 before falling to their opponents. Bartosz Golas and Juan Gomez would eventually fall to Ted Kelly and Bradley Klahn of Stanford in a back and forth battle, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (4), 6-0. Head coach Gene Carswell and assistant coach Ryan Redondo would also be outpaced in the round of 16 by Christoph Muller and Tobias Scheil of Rice, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3. The eventual victors, Haythem Abid and Nick Meister of UCLA, would defeat Muller and Scheil for the tournament crown.
The tournament is the second-oldest tennis event in the country and was first held in 1890 at The Hotel Del Monte in Monterey, Calif. According to the official website, the event was created to promote the sale of real estate on the Monterey peninsula. The original concept pitted the best players from the East versus those from the West.
Past winners of the tournament include Jack Kramer, Ted Schroeder, Bobby Riggs, Pancho Segura, Don Budge, Tony Trabert, Stan Smith, Bob Lutz, Arthur Ashe, Dennis Ralston and John McEnroe.
Teams that participated in the 2009 competition included Pepperdine, UCLA, USC, California, Stanford, Fresno State, UC San Diego, Rice, Notre Dame, Villanova and Boston College.
