SAN DIEGO - Former San Diego State women's water polo player Anna Gonzales was one of 12 players from around the country to be chosen for the 2009 Speedo Top 40, USA Water Polo announced Monday. Gonzales was selected from a pool of 110 athletes who participated in an open tryout held on Sunday, Sept. 27, at several locations across the nation by the U.S. Women's National Team.
The Speedo Top 40 is an annual event that features 40 of the best women's water polo athletes from across the United States. The event will take place on Oct. 23-25 in Los Alamitos, Calif., and will split the athletes into four teams, which will then square off to showcase their talent. The event will be complimented by a 16-team tournament featuring some of the nation's top club teams.
Gonzales left a lasting impression on SDSU water polo in her four years on The Mesa. The Fresno, Calif., native was voted to the All-America team three straight seasons as her production increased with each campaign. Her 92 goals in 2009 put her second all-time on the Aztec single-season scoring list, behind only Holly Hartzell. The utility player tallied 273 goals in her career, which is the second-most in school history, and ranks third all-time at San Diego State with 123 assists. She experienced similar success in the classroom as she was named to the ACWPC All-Academic Excellent squad this past June.
