SAN DIEGO - The San Diego State men's golf team continues its 2010 spring schedule, as the No. 31/35 Aztecs participate in the 54-hole Battle at the Beach, Feb. 14-16, at the par-71, 6,945-yard Ocean North Course at the Pelican Hill Golf Club in Newport Coast, Calif. The three-day inaugural event, co-hosted by UCLA and Long Beach State, starts Sunday with the Aztecs teeing off between 9:15 and 9:35 a.m. PT from the first hole.
SDSU is one of 14 elite teams in the field, which is highlighted by eight ranked among the top 35 nationally by Golfweek, including No. 1 Oklahoma, No. 3 Washington, No. 10 Texas, No. 11 Tennessee, No. 13 Arizona State, No. 15 UCLA and No. 35 Colorado State. The schools will be playing a unique format, as six golfers from each side, as opposed to the usual five, will compete with the best five scores counting toward the team total in each of the three rounds.
Representing San Diego State under head coach Ryan Donovan will be juniors Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden) and Matt Hoffenberg (Simi Valley, Calif.), sophomores Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.), Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.) and J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.), and freshman Tom Berry (New Haw, England).
The Aztec `A' squad opened 2010 with a 10th-place finish at the Arizona Intercollegiate in Tucson, Feb. 1-2, with Kang producing a solid 11th-place individual performance by matching his career best for a 54-hole with a 4-under 209.
Live stats will be available on golfstat.com and goaztecs.com for all three rounds of the 2010 Battle at the Beach.
