NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. - The 13th-ranked San Diego State water polo team rebounded from its two day-one losses with a 9-5 victory over UC San Diego at the UCI Invitational. The win breaks a two-game losing streak and improves the Aztecs' record to 9-5.
For the second straight game, Kimmy Keach led the Aztec scoring attack with her second consecutive three-goal performance. Amber Pezzolla, meanwhile, notched her sixth multiple-goal outing with her two goals and Melissa de Jonckheere, Meaghan Poland, Alex Ford and Hilary Whelan each found the back of the net once.
Both San Diego universities played even through the first two quarters as both squads scored once in the first eight minutes and twice in the second eight.
The game turned in the third quarter when the Aztecs scored twice on UCSD goalkeeper Markayla Quane. On the flip side, San Diego State buckled down defensively and held the Tritons off the scoreboard as the game entered the final period.
In the fourth quarter, the Aztecs exploded for four goals and allowed a pair of UCSD goals to post the four-goal victory and their first win of the invitational.
SDSU All-America goalkeeper Kelly Campoli continued her stellar play and made seven saves in helping the Aztecs hold their 13th opponent to nine goals or less.
San Diego State will play in the 13th-place game against Long Beach State or No. 15 UC Davis at 4 p.m. PT at Corona del Mar High School.
