STANFORD, Calif. - The 14th-ranked San Diego State water polo team stayed with No. 2 Stanford for the first 16 minutes, but were held off the scoreboard in the second half as the Cardinal pulled away from the Aztecs to post an 11-2 victory. With the loss, SDSU falls to 10-6 on the year and 0-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
The Scarlet and Black finished the first quarter down only 2-1 and went into halftime down 5-2. The second half, however, was a different story as Stanford exploded for three goals in the third and fourth quarters and shut down the SDSU offense to emerge with the nine-goal win.
Senior Melissa de Jonckheere and freshman Amber Pezzolla scored the lone pair of goal for the Aztecs, who were playing their first conference game of the season. Pezzolla scored her team-best 28th goal of the year and has now scored in five straight games and in 15 of SDSU's 16 games. de Jonckheere, meanwhile, netted her 15th goals of 2010.
San Diego State continues its short Northern California road trip on Saturday when it takes on No. 7 San Jose State. First sprint is scheduled for noon PT.
