SAN DIEGO - San Diego State women's tennis head coach Peter Mattera unveiled his team's schedule for the 2010-11 season on Friday. The Red and Black face nine teams that participated in last year's NCAA Tournament, up from six squads a year ago.
The Aztecs play their entire four tournament fall slate in Southern California, starting with the first of two SDSU Fall Classics on Oct. 1-3 at Aztec Tennis Center. SDSU will participate in two ITA tournaments: the All-American Championships in Los Angeles on Oct. 5-10 and the Southwest Regionals at Oct. 21-25, before concluding with the second edition o f the SDSU Fall Classic, Nov. 5-7.
Following the winter break, the Aztecs begin their dual-match spring season with a home doubleheader on Jan 22. UC Riverside and Cal State Fullerton will open up the proceedings for a seventh straight season, with matches beginning at approximately 9 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.
A week later, SDSU begins a grueling five-match stretch featuring four NCAA Tournament participants from last season. The Aztecs will travel to UC Irvine for a Jan. 29 clash at noon before welcoming in Washington, a second-round participant, on Feb. 5. Following a date at USC on Feb. 8, SDSU returns home for matches against Arizona on Feb. 7 and California on Feb. 12. The Golden Bears reached the round of 16 in last year's NCAA Tournament before losing to eventual semifinalist Notre Dame.
After a home dual with Long Beach State on Feb. 18, the Aztecs travel outside of California for the first time when they head to Hawai'i for matches against Cal State Northridge and Hawai'i on Feb. 25 and 26, respectively.
Following a 10-day break, San Diego State begins a four-match homestand at the Aztec Tennis Center, starting with a clash against NCAA Tournament participant Pepperdine on March 16. Visits from Denver (March 17) and NCAA tournament team Sacramento State (March 19) are up next for SDSU and the Aztecs round out their non-conference schedule by traveling up the freeway to face Loyola Marymount on March 26.
The Aztecs kick their 2011 MWC slate with a trio of neutral-site matches in Las Vegas against Wyoming (March 31), Colorado State (April 1) and Air Force (April 2). The Aztecs then return home and travel west for a midweek encounter at cross-town foe San Diego before hitting the road again to face New Mexico (April 9) and 2010 MWC tournament champion TCU (April 10) in Albuquerque.
Following their road trip, San Diego State concludes regular season play at the friendly confines of the Aztec Tennis Center. The competition will be stiff, however, as the Aztecs face Brigham Young (April 15) and a pair of NCAA Tournament teams in Utah (April 16) and UNLV (April 17). SDSU will then hit the road for the 2011 MWC Championship, slated for April 27-30 in Fort Collins, Colo.
