SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The San Diego State women's soccer team, the defending Mountain West Conference Champion, opened its 2010 campaign with a 1-0 loss to 9th-ranked Santa Clara Friday evening. The contest was the first for both schools as they kicked off the new season at the Broncos' Buck Shaw Stadium

The lone goal of the night came at the 21:06 mark when Maxine Goynes took a pass from Julie Johnston at the top of the box, turned and fired a shot into the lower left corner. SDSU goalkeeper Aubree Southwick got a hand on the shot, but was unable too keep it out of the net.

A few minutes later, Goynes had almost put the Broncos on the board when she took a through pass only to see her shot parried aside by Southwick.

Santa Clara was able to make that lone goal stand up, but could not to find a second even though it was officially credited with an 11-2 shot advantage over the 90 minutes. Despite the apparent imbalance in goal atttempts, the Aztecs posed an offensive threat and finished with a pair of corner kicks to one by the home side.

Southwick, a senior from Danville, Calif. (San Ramon Valley HS), ended the contest with four saves. Santa Clara keeper Bianca Henninger was not called upon to stop any shots although the Bronco defense was force to step up in the latter stages to hold off the Aztec attack

"We outplayed Santa Clara in the second half," noted SDSU head coach Mike Friesen. "Most of the action was in their end of the field and they had to change to a more defensive 4-5 1 formation to hang on. We put a lot of pressure on them and didn't get credit on the stat sheet for some of our shots."

San Diego State will face return to action on Sunday afternoon when it visits Sacramento State for a match scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
