THIS WEEK
San Diego State will compete in its first dual meet of the 2010-11 season when Oregon State visits the Aztec Aquaplex on Saturday, Oct. 2, at noon. The meet will consist of 14 swimming events including two relays as well as both the one- and three-meter diving competitions.
HEAD COACH MIKE SHRADER
San Diego State head coach Mike Shrader is in his fourth season with the Aztecs and has compiled a dual meet record of 31-13 (.705) during his tenure. Shrader was named the conference Coach of the Year at the conclusion of MWC Championship meet each of the past two seasons (co-coach in 2009). His career record including eight seasons at Nevada stands at 120-25-1 (.825).
THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME
San Diego State completed its second consecutive undefeated home season during its 2009-10 campaign. After finishing a perfect 10-0 in home meets last season, SDSU's record at the Aztec Aquaplex stands at 19-3 since the facility opened in the spring of 2008.
NON-CONFERENCE WIN STREAK
SDSU has a streak of 27 straight dual meet wins against non-conference opponents. The last loss to a non-MWC team was a defeat at North Texas on Nov. 17, 2006. In current head coach Mike Shrader's three seasons, the Aztecs have not lost to a non-conference foe.
JENNINGS WINS PENTATHLON
Sophomore Leona Jennings captured first place at last weekend's pentathlon meet against the University of San Diego at the Aquaplex. With individual standings based on total time in five events, Jennings finished first of 35 swimmers, winning three events (100 fly, 100 back, 200 IM) and finishing third and fourth in the other two (100 free and 100 breast respectively).
A pair of SDSU freshman, Mikaela Macklin and Berklie Oscarson, took second and third places while veterans Stephanie Koch, Emilee Jennings and Meghan Zimmer finished fourth through sixth.
MWC SWIMMER OF THE WEEK
Leona Jennings earned the first Mountain West Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week honors of the 2010-11 season. It was the second career MWC accolade for Jennings, who won the MWC Swimmer of the Week award as a freshman during the 2009-10 campaign. Jennings took top honors in the Aztecs' pentathlon meet held Sept. 24 vs. the University of San Diego. The sophomore finished first overall among the 35 student-athletes who competed in all five events.
Jennings won the 100-yard butterfly in 56.35, which is the third-fastest time for the event in Aztec Aquaplex history. She also clocked a time of 56.94 to win the 100-yard backstroke, and completed her day by taking first in the 200-yard individual medley (2:05.88). Her other finishes included third in the 100 free (52.72) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.69). Jennings, who also captured first place in an exhibition 100-yard individual medley (57.89), finished the pentathlon with a total time of 6:00.48.
TOP 10 TIME
During last weekend's pentathlon meet, freshman Kelly Marquenie (Gold Coast, Australia) turned in a time of 52.20 in the 100 freestyle. That mark ties for the ninth-fastest time ever in the SDSU record book.
NEW POOL RECORDS
Two swimmers improved on the Aztec Aquaplex records that they set last season during the pentathlon against USD on Sept. 24. Sophomore Stephanie Koch's time of 51.14 in the 100 free was a new facility record, bettering her previous low time of 51.34. Another sophomore, Katelyn Weddle, went 1:03.18 in the 100 breast to knock .10 seconds off her previous Aquaplex record.
In addition, three other swimmers had finishes that cracked the top 10 list for the SDSU's home pool. Freshman Mikaela Macklin had three top 10 Aquaplex marks: 100 Fly (57.61 - 6th); 100 Free (53.00 - 10th); 200 IM (2:09.82 - 10th). Marquenie's 52.20 in the 100 free ranks fifth while Berklie Oscarson's mark of 57.61 on the 100 back is seventh. Leon Jennings also entered the Aquaplex top 10 in the 100 fly with a time of 56.25 (3rd).
