THIS WEEK
San Diego State gets its 2010-11 Mountain West Conference season underway when it travels to Albuquerque, N.M., for a triple dual meet against Air Force, Colorado State and New Mexico on Saturday, Oct. 23. The meet will begin at 11:00 a.m. (MT) at the Seidler Natatorium on the UNM campus. The program will consist of 14 swimming events including two relays as well as both the one- and three-meter diving competitions.

LAST TIME OUT
In its opening dual meet of the season, San Diego State defeated Oregon State, 150-125, at the Aztec Aquaplex on Oct. 2. Leona Jennings won three individual events (100 & 200 back, 400 IM) and was on the winning 200 medley relay team. Freshman Kelly Marquenie (500 & 1000 free), Stephanie Koch (100 & 200 free) and Katelyn Weddle (10 & 200 breast) won two events each. SDSU won every event with the exception of the 200 fly.

MARQUENIE SETS CONFERENCE RECORD
Kelly Marquenie established a new Mountain West Conference record when she went 9:57.83 in the 1000 freestyle against Oregon State. Her time also established a new SDSU record as she became the first Aztec swimmer to break the 10-minute barrier in the event. In addition, Marquenie's time shattered the old record for the Aztec Aquaplex (10:10.07), one previously set by Petra Radovic last November during a triple dual meet against TCU, Idaho and UC San Diego.

NCAA `B' QUALIFIERS
Despite having participated in only two meets thus far, two SDSU swimmers have already met the "B" qualifying standard for the NCAA Championships. Leona Jennings' time of 54.86 in the 100 backstroke and Katelyn Weddle's mark of 1:02.06 in the 100 breaststroke met the provisional times needed to qualify for the NCAA meet. Both of those times were set in the dual meet against Oregon State on Oct. 2.

POOL RECORDS FALL
San Diego State swimmers set a total of seven new Aztec Aquaplex records during the meet against Oregon State on Oct. 2. That list included the following marks:

Event Swimmers Time1000 Free Kelly Marquenie 9:57.83100 Back Leona Jennings 54.86200 Back Leona Jennings 2:01.06100 Breast Katelyn Weddle 1:02.06200 Breast Katelyn Weddle 2:16.53400 IM Leona Jennings 4:25.98200 Medley Relay: Leona Jennings, Katelyn Weddle, Brooke Vessey, Emilee Jennings 1:43.28

Both Leona Jennings and Katelyn Weddle improved their previous pool record times (set as freshmen during the 2009-10 season) in both of the individual events in which they set new facility records on Oct. 2.

TOP TIMES
With seven of the nine Mountain West Conference schools having opened their seasons over the past couple weeks, San Diego State swimmers have recorded the league's top times in 11 of the 13 individual swimming event that have been contested thus far. In addition, the Aztecs also have the top times in both of the relay events in which they have competed.
Three weeks into the season, Aztec swimmers are listed among the top 20 national times in six events. That group includes Kelly Marquenie (1000 free - 5th), Katelyn Weddle (100 breast - 4th; 200 breast - 8th) and Leone Jennings (100 back - 7th; 200 back - 16th; 400 IM - 13th). In addition, SDSU is also listed in a pair of relays: 400 free relay (Meghan Zimmer, Stephanie Koch, Marquenie, Shaida Solimani) - 10th and the 200 medley relay (Leona Jennings, Weddle, Brooke Vessey, Emilee Jennings) - 8th.

UP NEXT
SDSU will continue Mountain West Conference action with a home meet against Brigham Young on Thursday, Nov. 4, at the Aztec Aquaplex. That meet will get underway at 1:00 p.m. (PT). vf
