SAN DIEGO - No. 10 San Diego State took an early first-quarter lead and never looked back as the Aztecs downed the SDSU Alumni, 9-6, Saturday afternoon at Aztec Aquaplex. The win is the fourth straight for the current Aztecs.
After SDSU took a two-goal lead after one period, it had to grind it out the rest of the way en route to the three-goal decision. In the second quarter, each side scored two goals apiece as San Diego State carried a 6-4 lead into halftime.
Coming out of the mid-game break, the Alumni cut into the Aztecs' lead by outscoring the current student-athletes, 2-1, in the third stanza and trailed 7-6 heading into the final period. San Diego State, however, put an end to any thoughts of an Alumni upset as it netted two unanswered goals to secure the win.
Alex Ford and Kimmy Keach led SDSU with two goals apiece and received single goals from Sarah Brady, Ashley de Goede, Amber Pezzolla, Meaghan Poland and Sam Voigt. Kelly Campoli made 11 saves in the first half, Erin Abrams tallied three in the third quarter and Clair Babinski stopped six shots in goal for the Aztecs.
For the Alumni, USA Water Polo Hall of Famer Gubba Sheehy and Sandy Onweller each scored twice, while Melissa deJonckheere and Stacy Werner both found the back of the net once. Heather Fenske, meanwhile, was stellar in net for the Alumni.
San Diego State officially opens its season Jan. 29 at the UCSB Invitational.
