SAN DIEGO - No. 9 San Diego State opened the UCSD Triton Invitational with a 20-5 victory over Somona State. With the victory, the Aztecs improve to 6-1 and have now beaten SSU twice already in the early going.
In the first period, the Aztecs put up a five spot and never looked back. After one half of play, San Diego State found itself up 7-3 and it was just the beginning of what was to come in the second half.
In the aforementioned second half, the Aztecs scored six times in the third quarter and seven times in the final eight minutes to record the 15-goal victory.
Today marked the second time this season in which SDSU scored 20 goals. In the season-opening contest vs. Sonoma State, San Diego State registered a 24-3 victory.
Kimmy Keach led all players with four goals and Alex Ford netted three herself. Ashley deGoede, Leanne Ford, Kim Lewis and Jenna Natalizio, meanwhile, scored two goals apiece. Sarah Brady Rachel Miller, Amber Pezzolla, Meaghan Poland and Emily Whalen all found the back of the net once.
Goalkeeper Kelly Campoli was credited with eight saves, Erin Abrams stopped four shots and Clair Babinski made two saves.
SDSU will return to the pool against No. 11 UC Irvine at 5:50 p.m. tonight.
