SAN DIEGO - Ninth-ranked San Diego State's come-from-behind effort vs. No. 3 UCLA came up a tad short on Sunday morning at the UCSD Triton Invitational. The Aztecs scored five fourth-quarter goals, but ran out of time as they ultimately fell, 8-7. The loss drops SDSU to 7-2 on the season.
The Bruins shut out the Aztecs in the first quarter 2-0 and both teams played to a 1-1 tie in the second eight minutes as the score was 3-1 at halftime.
UCLA maintained its lead in the third period thanks to a 2-1 effort in the frame, which put San Diego State in a 5-2 hole entering the final stanza.
The Aztecs, with their backs against the wall, responded with a resounding five goals, but allowed three themselves and could not find the equalizing goal as the Bruins advanced to the championship game.
San Diego State returns to the pool later this afternoon when it plays in the third-place game at 4:30 p.m., against the loser of today's LMU-Michigan game.
