SAN DIEGO - The sixth-ranked San Diego State men's golf team will play its next two tournaments in the county limits, as it first co-hosts the 2011 San Diego Intercollegiate Classic, presented by TaylorMade Golf and Lamkin Grips, March 14-15. The 54-hole event will take place at the par-72, 7,050-yard San Diego Country Club in Chula Vista, Calif.
The Aztecs will be among a field of 12 schools which includes three other local squads in fellow host No. 19 USD, Point Loma Nazarene and Cal State San Marcos. Two other Mountain West Conference foes in Air Force and Colorado State will also make the trip, as will Fresno State, Hawai'i, Long Beach State, Nevada, SMU and Texas-Arlington.
Seven SDSU golfers will compete under head coach Ryan Donovan, including the same line-up that won the Fresno State Lexus Classic by 26 strokes last week. Senior Johan Carlsson (Gothenburg, Sweden), juniors Colin Featherstone (Fallbrook, Calif.), J.J. Spaun (San Dimas, Calif.), Alex Kang (Oak Park, Calif.), sophomore Tom Berry (New Haw, England) and freshman Todd Baek (Auckland, New Zealand) make up the starting six, while redshirt sophomore Evan Emerick (Oceanside, Calif.) will compete as an individual in his first tourney of 2011.
Last year, the Aztecs sent four individual golfers to the San Diego Intercollegiate, which was played at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., on Feb. 2. Berry was San Diego State' highest finisher, taking fourth in the 36-hole event with a 4-over 148.
Teams will play 36 holes on Monday with a shotgun start beginning at 8 a.m. PST. The final 18 holes tee-off between 7:45 and 9:39 a.m. from the No. 1 and No. 10 holes. Live results will be available on goaztecs.com, as well as golfstat.com for both days.
